A Day At My Cottage – A Descriptive Essay

In school, we are learning about descriptive essays.  A descriptive essay is a piece of literature in which the author tries to make his or her reader feel like they are in the story and experiencing all that is happening.  The writer creates a word picture to help the reader imagine how something looks, feels, smells, tastes, or sounds.  I thought you might like to read a descriptive essay about my cottage.

A DAY AT MY COTTAGE

We pack our bags and jump into the car.  I’m so excited!  I always have fun when my family and I go to my cottage in Indiana.  My parents sit up front and I sit in the back of the car with my dog, Blue. It’s about a 2-hour ride from my house to my cottage.  I can tell when we’re at my cottage because we always drive down a rocky road that makes a crackling sound under the weight of our heavy car.  When we get there, we unpack.  Then, it’s time for a day of fun and relaxation.  I love walking down to a certain area where there are millions of bullfrogs to catch.  It’s an awesome feeling to catch and hold a bullfrog in your hand.  It’s slimy from sitting in muck all day, but also smooth and delicate in a way.  I also enjoy going fishing.   Every now and then a fish will jump high out of the water and then make a soft splash as gravity pulls it back down.  I don’t know what the fish is thinking, but I think it’s mocking me and saying, “Ha! Ha! You can’t catch me!”  On the other hand, the dragonflies at my cottage practically land on me.  I love seeing their gorgeous colors.  They are so light and fragile that I feel if I touch them, they might break.

When I’m not catching bullfrogs, fish, or dragonflies, I’m either jumping waves on my wave runner, or taking a nice relaxing family boat ride.  When we ride on our boat, we bring snacks, card games, music and of course, we wear our swimsuits so we can jump in every once-in-a-while to cool off.  When I jump into the water, it feels so good.  It’s a nice refreshing feeling.   The water’s calm and chilly and so beautiful to look at.  The sun is beginning to set and the sky displays an elegant blur of pink, orange, yellow, and purple colors.  We sit on our boat until it completely disappears behind the trees.  Then, we drive our boat back to our cottage.  It’s getting darker and darker.  I open the front door of my cottage and look down at my little toad buddies who always come by my cottage at night.  I pick one up and hold it up to the “bug-infested” light outside my door so it can have a night-time snack.  After that, I walk over to the bonfire that my dad has already started.  I sit down with my family by the bonfire and soon all of us are mesmerized and staring into the flames of the fire.  It’s a good time to think about all the fun times that we’ve had and thank God for blessing us with our cottage.  After having several marshmallows, we go to bed.

In the morning, I awake to the aroma of warm cinnamon rolls and eggs that my mom has prepared for breakfast.  I sit down at the breakfast table and wait for the new day of fun to come.
