A few weeks back, I was buying some fresh produce at a local grocery store when I noticed a man buying a huge quantity of fresh limes. The limes were on sale so I could see buying a bit more than usual, but this man had bags of limes filling his grocery cart. I had to know why he was buying so many. Could he be trying to set a record for baking the biggest key lime pie ever? Was he going to be the next star on “Hoarders”? Was he planning the ultimate margarita party and could I get an invitation? (Just kidding) But I did want to know what he was planning to do with all those limes, so I asked him.
The man was very nice and told me that he and his wife drink freshly squeezed lime juice every day and haven’t had a cold in over three years. Interesting. I thanked him and then bought a few limes for myself. Couldn’t hurt I thought. I brought them home and every now and then I squeezed the juice into my glass of water for a refreshing drink. Then, I did some research about his claim. Here’s what I found.
Limes are an excellent source of vitamin C and contain anti-cancer properties. They also contain anti-viral properties that fight infections and halt the progress of a cold. Limes have been used to cure scurvy, respiratory disorders, ulcers, urinary disorders, and gout. People also use limes for skin care and as an aid in weight loss.
Now, while I cannot personally attain to all those claims, I do know that the lime is a refreshing fruit with lots of vitamin C, and would be a great addition to your diet. When added to a glass of drinking water, it makes a healthy and refreshing alternative to high calorie soft drinks. You can even make lime ice cubes to add to your water or ice tea. Limes also are great for cooking. They can be squeezed over chicken, veggies, or fish for great flavor, or used to create a zesty salad dressing or marinade. Limes are used in many Mexican dishes and of course in Key Lime Pie. I hope to share some recipes using limes in upcoming posts.
So grab a lime, wash it thoroughly, and then add it to your food and drinks and starting reaping good taste and great health benefits.
