This Sunday, June 19th, is Father’s Day. I thought I’d offer a few alternative ideas to the usual tie or power tool as a gift. I am always a big fan of home-made gifts. What about composing a poem, a song, or letter telling dad how much he means to you and how thankful you are for the things he does. A top ten list can also tell dad how great he is while adding a little humor. With software like Microsoft Movie Maker or Windows DVD Maker, it is easy to create a great DVD of your favorite pictures of your dad and set it to some great music like “Smile” by Uncle Kracker or a more sentimental song like “Song for Dad” by Keith Urban.
Picture books/scrap books are also very nice. I just recently pulled out a poster of a timeline my daughter made in school. It captured favorite memories from each year of her life. I thought it might be nice to make a keepsake book (easier to store than a poster) with a timeline showing pictures of fun times with dad from each year. Another school assignment my daughter had this year was to interview an older person in her life that she respected. She interviewed my mother-in-law and put together a biography – a typed book with some pictures, with the cover laminated. We made a copy of that school assignment and gave it to her for Mother’s Day. She really loved it. This would be a great gift for grandpas, as well as dads.
You could also make up coupons or gift certificates offering dad deals like “take out the trash”, “mow the lawn and pull weeds”, “two hour undisturbed nap”, or “complete control of the T.V. remote for a day”.
Another great idea is to plan a special day with dad. You could make him his favorite breakfast or dinner, bake his favorite dessert, pack a picnic lunch and go fishing, go for a bike ride, or a nice relaxing walk.
You could even create basket of his favorite snacks, personalize a shirt, or even personalize an apron, especially if he is a BBQ grill master.
The point is, just show dad how special he is. He will surely appreciate any gift that truly comes from your heart.
On Saturday, Elizabeth will share with you the special gifts she made for her dad.
