Another supplement I take is CoQ10 which is an abbreviation for Coenzyme Q10. It is a compound that our body makes naturally and, in our diet, is mostly present in fish, whole grains, poultry, spinach, soybean oils, and organ meats like liver. It is found in the cells of the body and required to convert nutrients to energy. Studies have shown that CoQ10 has the unique ability to increase oxygen utilization in our body and also that deficiencies of this compound can affect overall heart health. The studies suggest that as we age, our bodies own production of CoQ10 can greatly decrease and that various heart related issues may be associated with this decrease. To name a few, ailments like coronary heart disease, atherosclerosis, congestive heart failure, and high blood pressure. Additionally, studies suggest that low levels of CoQ10 can be associated with some forms of cancer.
The brand CoQ10 that I use is Solaray and is manufactured by the Nutraceutical Corporation. Soloray has been in the supplement business since 1973 and has very high standards regarding testing and quality control of their products. Several of the supplements I use are Solaray products because of the company’s aforementioned high standards, dedication to quality, and their commitment to use natural ingredients in their products. As with any supplement, you need to check with your doctor first, but particularly this one, especially if you are taking any prescription blood thinners as CoQ10 can reduce the effectiveness of these drugs. In general though, if you are looking for a powerful antioxidant that supports cardiovascular health, then this supplement may be for you.
