This post is for all sinus infection/allergy sufferers. I used to get at least 1-2 sinus infections each year requiring a doctor’s visit and a round of antibiotic treatments. Because of my awareness regarding the overuse and resistance to antibiotics, I wanted to find a natural alternative. As we have stated in our blog, there are definitely times when you will need to take traditional medicine prescribed by your doctor, but in many cases, if you do a little research you can find a healthy natural alternative. That was what I did and in about the last six years I have had only two sinus infections requiring antibiotic treatment. The product I found after some research on the internet is called NeilMed Sinus Rinse. It is a Nasal Irrigation System that was initiated by Dr. Ketan Mehta a sinus sufferer himself looking for relief from his sinus problems. I believe most sinus sufferers have similar symptoms i.e., you start to get post nasal drip that gets progressively worse which leads to a sore throat, and finally an upper respiratory/sinus infection. At least that was how it usually progressed for me. Now I use the rinse once or twice a week as a preventative, and positively at the first sign of post nasal drip to avoid a full blown upper respiratory infection. Although I have to admit the concept seemed weird at first, I believe after a couple of uses you will find, as I did, that the rinse is very easy to use and a healthy alternative to antibiotics. You can find detailed and easy to understand directions on the irrigation kit’s box explaining how to use the solution. In general here is how it works, you gently squeeze the applicator bottle, with the prepared solution, into one nostril and the fluid naturally comes out the other nostril. You can find a great deal of information regarding this product and nasal irrigation on the internet. You will also find both pros and cons, so check it for yourself or consult your family Doctor; but as I described, this has almost eliminated my sinus problems.
I can tell you from personal experience that this works. I do know that there are certain situations that you just need an antibiotic. But, there are so many people that do not let anything run its course and always jump to calling their physician to request antibiotics. I recently had congestion and cough from a post nasal drip. It went on for days and people were telling me that I needed an antibiotic. I decided to use the NeilMed sinus rinse ( which I have used in the past) and it worked after doing it once a day for 2 days. I almost immediately felt relief after the one day but decided to do it one more day. I even had ear pressure with this congestion that was relieved after using the sinus rinse. Of course, I did have one of the physicians that I work with check my ears to make sure there was not an infection and there was not. I work at a pediatric office and we also encourage “sinus irrigation” for symptom relief from sinus pressure and post nasal drip.
Hey Misch…Yes we have discussed this before and I am still using NeilMed…with great results!
